Singapore at a glance

Welcome to Singapore. You do not need to memorise every rule or know every neighbourhood to enjoy your visit. You do need a few reliable habits: check important information at its source, notice signs, ask when unsure and plan how to get help. This course follows a traveller's first day, from arrival to transport, food and exploration.

Expect a well-signposted, digitally supported city, but not a completely frictionless visit. You may encounter crowded trains, queues, heavy rain, a cash-only stall or a phone-registration step. A short service interaction is not necessarily unfriendly. Ask a clear question, give people space and avoid interpreting one encounter as a national personality.

Singapore is a multicultural city. English is a common language for everyday communication, alongside Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. You may hear colloquial English called Singlish. You can ask someone to repeat a phrase; there is no need to imitate an accent or assume everyone communicates in the same way. [R8]
