Some stories entertain you. Others stay with you because they recognise something familiar: the difficulty of believing in yourself when nobody around you seems willing to do the same.

Babita Singh Reporting, now streaming on Prime Video, wraps that idea inside a small-town murder investigation. Directed by Ambiecka Pandit and written by Amita Vyas, the Hindi crime drama stars Nimisha Sajayan as suspended police officer Babita “Baby” Singh.

A cop nobody takes seriously

Baby is not introduced as a conventional screen hero. She is quiet, accommodating and frequently underestimated. At home, she is expected to fit into other people’s plans. At work, a suspension has weakened her authority before the investigation even begins.

Then her childhood friend Bansi is killed. The loss leaves Baby with unanswered questions and the painful sense that she missed one final conversation with someone who needed help.

She cannot let the matter go. Without official support or influence, she begins with what she does have: observation, instinct, intelligence and determination.

Nimisha Sajayan keeps Baby real

Nimisha Sajayan’s performance gives the film its emotional centre. She does not turn Baby into an instantly fearless investigator. Instead, we see her think, hesitate, absorb other people’s doubt and slowly decide to trust what she knows.

That restraint matters. Baby’s strength does not arrive through a dramatic transformation into somebody else. It appears when she stops allowing other people’s judgement to define what she can do.

The film also features Barun Sobti and Anshumaan Pushkar in pivotal roles, but it is Baby’s inner journey that holds the story together.

When the character matters more than glamour

Babita Singh Reporting works because its central character is allowed to look and behave like an ordinary person. The film does not ask Baby to become larger than life before the audience can believe in her.

That choice makes the investigation personal. The question is not only whether Baby can solve Bansi’s murder. It is whether she can keep listening to herself while the people closest to her insist that she is wrong.

Ambiecka Pandit’s grounded direction

Director Ambiecka Pandit keeps the film focused on Baby’s lived experience—the pressure inside the home, the indifference around the investigation and the small moments in which confidence begins to return.

Pandit’s direction and Vyas’s writing avoid turning self-belief into a slogan. Baby earns each step forward. Her courage is persuasive precisely because doubt remains part of the journey.

The film is produced by Saurabh Malhotra, Manuj Mittra and Tina Tharwani, with Sudip Sharma serving as executive producer.

What Baby’s journey leaves behind

  • Believe your own observations, especially when something important refuses to feel right.
  • Do not confuse quietness with weakness or an ordinary appearance with an ordinary mind.
  • Friendship can retain its meaning even when two people have not spoken every day.
  • Doing the right thing may require moving forward before anybody offers support or recognition.

The film’s simplest idea is also its strongest: you do not need everybody else to believe in you before you begin believing in yourself.

Babita Singh Reporting premiered on Prime Video on 28 August 2026.
