For Indians living in Singapore, renewing an Indian passport is an important administrative task that can affect overseas travel, employment passes, permanent residency applications and other immigration formalities.

The good news is that the renewal process can be completed in Singapore without travelling to India. However, applicants need to complete the online application, prepare the required documents and submit the application through the authorized passport application centre.

As of October 2026, passport services for eligible applicants in Singapore are handled through BLS International, the service provider appointed by the High Commission of India (HCI), Singapore. The High Commission has also published updated passport service fees effective from 1 July 2026.

When should you renew your Indian passport?

You do not necessarily need to wait until your passport expires before applying for a new one.

Consider applying for reissue if:

  • Your passport is due to expire or has already expired.
  • Your passport has fewer or no blank pages available for visas and immigration stamps.
  • Your personal particulars need to be updated.
  • Your passport has been damaged, lost or stolen. These cases follow a different procedure from a routine renewal.

For ordinary adult passports, it is sensible to start planning well before the expiry date, particularly if you intend to travel, renew an employment pass or complete another immigration application.

Important: Check the passport validity requirements of your destination and any transit countries before booking travel. Some destinations require a specified period of validity beyond your intended stay.

Who can apply for passport renewal in Singapore?

According to the High Commission of India, eligible applicants include Indian nationals residing in Singapore under residential statuses such as:

Singapore Permanent Resident (PR), Employment Pass (EP), S Pass (SP), Work Permit (WP), Dependant's Pass (DP), Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP).

The High Commission states that applicants on short-term visit status are not eligible for ordinary passport or visa services through the regular process.

Special arrangements apply to visitors whose passports have been lost, damaged or otherwise require emergency travel documents.

If your immigration status is unusual or your pass is about to expire, confirm your eligibility with the High Commission or BLS before proceeding.

Step-by-step process to renew your Indian passport

Step 1: Complete the online passport application

Start by visiting the official Passport Seva portal for Indian missions abroad:

Official application portal: https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission/

Register or sign in as required, select the relevant Indian mission and complete the passport application for reissue.

Enter your particulars carefully, including:

  • Full name as recorded in your existing passport
  • Date and place of birth
  • Existing passport number and issue details
  • Family particulars, wherever requested
  • Current residential address in Singapore
  • Address in India and other requested contact details

Review the application before submitting it. Differences in names, dates of birth or other particulars may require supporting documents or additional checks.

The High Commission specifically advises applicants to provide their current address in India with supporting documents. If you do not have a current Indian address, contact the passport section at passport.singapore@mea.gov.in for guidance on the available options.

Step 2: Upload your photograph and signature

The High Commission requires applicants to upload their photograph and signature before submitting the online application.

Its published guidance specifies a colour photograph measuring 630 × 810 pixels, subject to the applicable ICAO photograph requirements.

Before uploading, check the latest official photograph guidance for requirements concerning the background, framing, image quality and facial position.

Avoid assuming that a photograph accepted for a Singapore identity document or another application will automatically meet Indian passport requirements.

Save or print the completed application form after submission.

Step 3: Prepare the supporting documents

For a routine passport reissue, the High Commission's published list identifies the following core documents:

  1. A printout of the registered passport application, with the photograph and signature uploaded.
  2. A copy of your existing or expired Indian passport.
  3. Proof of valid residential status in Singapore, such as your NRIC, EP, S Pass, DP or WP, including the relevant validity information.

Keep the original documents available for verification if requested.

Additional documents may be necessary depending on your circumstances. For example, a change of name, a change in other passport particulars, a damaged passport, or an application for a minor may involve different requirements.

Check the latest checklist on the official High Commission website and the instructions provided by BLS before visiting.

Step 4: Book an appointment with BLS International

For ordinary passport services, applicants must submit their applications in person at an authorised BLS International Passport Application Centre. The High Commission does not accept routine passport applications at its premises.

Use the official BLS Singapore website and appointment system:

Choose an appointment according to the current instructions, and retain the appointment confirmation.

The BLS appointment page lists two centres:

CBD area

Unit 30-08, 10 Anson Road, Singapore 079903

Little India

Unit 14-02/04/05, Sim Lim Tower, 10 Jalan Besar, Singapore 208787

Check the latest address, operating hours, appointment availability and document-submission instructions before travelling. Centre arrangements may change.

Step 5: Submit your application in person

On the day of your appointment, bring your application printout and the documents specified in the applicable checklist.

At the centre, your documents and application will be checked, and the applicable charges will be collected according to the current payment instructions.

Keep your receipt and application reference number. These will be useful for tracking your application and following up if required.

Do not assume that submitting an application means the passport will be issued immediately. Additional verification may be necessary, depending on the case.

Step 6: Track your application and receive your passport

After submission, monitor your application through the tracking instructions provided by BLS or the relevant official portal.

Follow any additional requests for documents or clarification promptly.

Once your new passport is issued, follow the collection or delivery instructions communicated for your application. Check your name, date of birth, passport number, validity dates and other particulars when you receive it.

If you notice an error, raise it promptly with the issuing authority rather than waiting until your next trip.

How much does Indian passport renewal cost in Singapore?

The High Commission of India published revised passport service fees effective from 1 July 2026. The following amounts are in Singapore dollars (SGD).

Passport service fees in SGD — effective 1 July 2026
Passport categoryStandard feeTatkaal fee
Adult passport, 36 pages, 10-year validityS$162S$320
Adult passport, 60 pages, 10-year validityS$225S$384
Minor's passport, 36 pagesS$117S$276

These fees are for the passport service itself. Check the current BLS charges and any applicable additional service fees before submitting your application.

Which passport should you choose?

  • 36 pages: May be sufficient for applicants who travel occasionally.
  • 60 pages: May be more suitable for frequent international travellers who regularly need visa pages.

The passport validity and eligibility rules for minors differ from those for adults. Confirm the correct category before paying.

How long does passport renewal take?

The High Commission's published guidance provides the following indicative timelines:

Indicative processing times
Application typeIndicative processing time
Normal passport reissueUp to 8–10 days
Tatkaal passport reissueAround 3 working days
Lost or damaged passport, or change of particularsApproximately 30 days on average, subject to verification

These are indicative timelines published by the High Commission, not guaranteed delivery dates. Confirm the latest guidance before making travel arrangements.

Applications involving police verification in India or discrepancies in the submitted documents may take longer. The overall time before you receive your passport may also depend on appointment availability and the collection or delivery arrangements.

Practical tip: If you have an upcoming flight, visa application or employment pass renewal, do not plan around the shortest advertised processing time. Apply early and allow a buffer for unexpected delays.

Can you apply for an urgent passport through Tatkaal?

Yes. The High Commission publishes a Tatkaal service for eligible passport applications.

Its current guidance indicates that Tatkaal applications can be submitted at the High Commission with a prior appointment, while the BLS appointment page states that Tatkaal applicants do not need to book an appointment at BLS and may visit on a working day between 9 am and 3.30 pm.

Because these are different submission arrangements, confirm the route applicable to your case before visiting either location.

Tatkaal charges are higher than standard passport fees. Not every type of passport application or special circumstance will necessarily qualify.

If your passport is lost, damaged, or requires changes to personal particulars, contact the High Commission or BLS to establish the appropriate procedure rather than assuming the ordinary Tatkaal route applies.

What if you are renewing a child's Indian passport?

Parents renewing a child's passport should follow the specific instructions for minors rather than relying on the adult checklist.

Depending on the circumstances, additional documents may be required relating to the child's existing passport, parents' passports, residential status, consent and guardianship.

Before starting the application, check the High Commission's separate guidance for minor passport renewals. If parents have different nationalities, different addresses, or a special custody or guardianship arrangement, seek clarification before submitting the application.

The applicable fee and passport validity also depend on the child's age and category.

What if your passport has expired, been lost or been damaged?

An expired passport can generally be submitted for reissue through the standard renewal process, subject to the applicable requirements.

A lost or damaged passport is different. You should follow the dedicated lost or damaged passport instructions published by the High Commission. These cases can involve additional documentation, police verification or other checks, and processing times may be longer.

If you are a short-term visitor whose passport has been lost or damaged, the High Commission identifies a separate route for emergency travel documents. Contact the High Commission directly for instructions.

Do not submit an ordinary renewal application without checking the correct category if your passport is missing or materially damaged.

Common mistakes to avoid

A little preparation can reduce the risk of delays.

  • Using an incorrect photograph. Upload a photograph that meets the current Indian passport specifications to avoid rejection.
  • Entering inconsistent personal details. Check names, dates of birth and existing passport details before submitting the form.
  • Not providing a supported Indian address. The High Commission specifically asks applicants to provide their current address in India with supporting documentation. Contact the passport section if you do not have one.
  • Turning up without an appointment when one is required. Follow the current instructions for your application category and submission location.
  • Confusing passport fees with total application costs. Verify BLS service charges and any other applicable fees in addition to the published passport fee.
  • Applying too close to a trip. Processing timelines are indicative. Delays can arise from verification, incomplete documentation or other circumstances.
  • Using unofficial agents or websites. Start with the official Passport Seva, High Commission and BLS websites. Avoid websites that imitate government services or demand unexplained additional payments.
